Objective:
This curriculum is designed to help students work effectively in the health care environment. The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The surgical technologist works to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Program Description:
Students’ preparation includes extensive theoretical and operating room
background in the areas of human anatomy and physiology, surgical
asepsis, introduction to surgical technology, principles and practices
of surgical technology, surgical pharmacology, surgical terminology,
and surgical procedures. Emphasis will be placed on information and
technique necessary for successfully passing the Tech in Surgery
Certification administered by the National Center for Competency
Testing. Students will be prepared for an entry-level position as a
